Update : Unfortunately the "fix" wasn't permanent.
After the first boot everything was working OK. But then cups doesn't start after subsequent boots.
Meanwhile /var/spool/cups/tmp/.hplip has emerged from somewhere. And /var/log/cups/error_log now contains "Unable to remove temporary file "/var/spool/cups/tmp/.hplip" - Is a directory".
(The system does not have any HP hardware whatsoever.)
Manually removing the .hplip drirectory again fixes the situation for one boot only ..
Manually running "/etc/init.d/cups start" always works regardless the .hplip directory.
