Bug Description

The most recent Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy AMIs published by Canonical are from April 2009:

  # us-east-1 32-bit
  ami-5d59be34
  canonical-cloud-us/ubuntu-hardy-20090422-i386.manifest.xml

  # us-east-1 64-bit
  ami-2959be40
  canonical-cloud-us/ubuntu-hardy-20090422-amd64.manifest.xml

  # eu-west-1 32-bit
  ami-30c0e844
  canonical-cloud-eu/ubuntu-hardy-20090422-i386.manifest.xml

  # eu-west-1 64-bit
  ami-3ac0e84e
  canonical-cloud-eu/ubuntu-hardy-20090422-amd64.manifest.xml

A lot of bugs which were in these images have been fixed in the underlying packages (e.g., vm-builder, ec2-init) but in order for the fixes to be usable, a new Hardy AMI needs to be published.

I'm creating this ticket to track the creation of updated Hardy images.

In case it isn't implied, new AKIs (kernels) and ARIs (ramdisks) are also desired.

I just wanted to post some progress here. I have verified that the latest vmbuilder (trunk) and other relavant code pieces are able to build a hardy image. the instructions for doing so are in the attached.

updated copy and paste for hardy image build on ec2 instance.
This uses karmic beta, and removes any references to external patches.

I've got images built and uploaded to ec2, using the same build process that is used for the karmic builds. "Daily" builds of hardy are currently set up to occur twice a week [1]. For now this is early morning (GMT) on Monday and Thursday.

You can get AMI ids at [2] or [3].

I would like to get testing on these images. There are 3 bugs that we'd like to get fixed:
 - bug 308530 [ec2-init]: wait for metadata service before getting user data or using metadata service.
 - bug 420635 [kernel]: fix kernel for local privilege escalation
 - bug 421707 [landscape-client]: cron job is broken

We've got the first two of those fixed, and are waiting on the landscape-client fix.

If you are interested in using updated hardy images, please test the AMIs and give feedback.

With some help from the landscape team, bug 421707 is now fixed and available in 20091112.1 builds.

As far as I can tell, then the 3 bugs listed above are in and ready to go. I'm planning on doing a final round of testing on 20091112.1 and publishing as an updated release to the 'ubuntu-hardy-20090422' releases that are there.
