Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-21-386

I installed Dapper Drake using an alpha CD ISO which contained linux-image-2.6.15-19-386, and all was fine.

When the automatic upgrade to linux-image-2.6.15-21-386 happened, I was unable to boot. The boot process freezes on "Waiting for root file system".

I am able to boot normally by selecting 2.6.15-19 in grub.

Let me know what commands I should execute to get relevant hardware info, but here's some stuff that may be useful:

I see that aic7xxx is loaded. Is this driver necessary to access the root filesystem? (SCSI driver for Adaptec cards)

aic7xxx is broken for kernels 2.6.15-21 up to and including 2.6.15-22.33

Please give feedback.

Hi Thomas,

I don't know. How would I find out?

Thanks, Andy

I just wanted to know whether your ubuntu installation is located on a SCSI disk connected to an Adaptec SCSI controller.

In any case, you should attach the output of lspci -v, the content of /etc/fstab and maybe the output of sudo fdisk -l.

From my BIOS and lspci, it looks like I am using an Adaptec SCSI controller:

OK, your system is booting from a SCSI disk, the only SCSI controller is an Adaptec AIC-7892A U160, which needs the kernel module aic7xxx. As I said, this module is broken in the kernel release you tried. A fix for this is already commited (but maybe not packaged yet).

Marking this bug as a duplicate of #41061
