Bug Description

System with Intel 945GM freezes randomly

Somebody might say this is a duplicate of this bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/Linux/+bug/355155/ but since I believe the other bug is a mix of at least 3 different bugs I start this one here *ONLY* for systems with an Intel graphics chip.

With Jaunty

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04

my *Gnome* desktop freezes randomly - I have *Compiz* activated. That did not occur with Intrepid. A *memtest* does not find any problems - it ran almost for 24 hours. During a freeze my mouse still moves so it's not a complete system freeze anyway. My laptop is a Lenovo X60s.

The typical situation is (AFAIR) not related to Compiz' scale feature as I wrote in the other bug report before. All I can say for sure is that the last 5 times it happened was while I was watching a video with *gmplayer*. The video has these characteristics:
$ file <that video>
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

At the same time I was surfing these two websites using firefox:
www.spiegel.de
www.amazona.de

$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.10, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2009 mozilla.org

These sites contain flash and I have adobe's flash plug-in installed:
$ dpkg -l | grep adobe
ii adobe-flashplugin 10.0.22.87-2jaunty1 Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10

While the laptop is frozen I can't
- leave X and switch to a real console (tty1)
- press CAPS or NUM LOCK...
- SSH on that machine

During one of the last freezes I had a camera in grabbing range. I tried the key combo "alt-sysrq-k". It took about 30s and this happened: Screen is black with a thick blue stripe on the right side. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1303 . After pressing "alt-sysrq-k" several times this window appeared: "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode" - also saying:

"(EE) intel(0): Failed to set tiling on front buffer: rejected by kernel".

See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1304 . Then another window appears asking what to do. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1305 . I chose "Exit to console login". This put me on tty1 but totally screwed up - I wasn't able to type something blindly. See here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1307 . Going back to the console where gnome was running on showed this here http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1308 . After pressing "ctrl-alt-backspace" my computer performed a shut down.

After thinking a little about that line here:

"(EE) intel(0): Failed to set tiling on front buffer: rejected by kernel"

I remembered that I manually added some proposed lines to my xorg.conf that I read about in a Howto dealing with that Intel driver performance loss - see here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
 Option "EXAOptimizeMigration" "true"
 Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
 Option "Tiling" "true"
EndSection

I removed the lines dealing with "Tiling" and "MigrationHeuristic" but this morning I had another freeze.

Some information that I won't attach as files:

i was on your other bug report but ill post here too, since i am running an intel chipset too, on a dell inspiron 1525n. the laptop was preinstalled with ubuntu (7:10), so all the hardware should work fine and be compatible with open standards. the laptop was upgraded through 8:4, 8:10 and now 9:4. previous incarnations of ubuntu all worked fine for me. im rocking 32bit architecture.

i also get system freezes, where the mouse still responds. ctrl-alt-backspace (whihc i dontzapped) doesnt recover the system, and alt-sysreq-k takes me to a black screen where i have to hard-reset anyway. keyboard is unresponsive otherwise.

the freeze happened while watching flash video's in firefox, but also when switching work-spaces, when hotplugging peripherals, when using the scale plug in... basically, its unpredictable when it will happen. im lucky though as i only freeze about twice a week.

i have now turned compiz off, and am running metacity as the windows manager. this appears to have stopped me getting freezes, but i dont consider turning off services much of a bug fix. i know that theres an ugly fix with upgrading to RC kernels, but thats not much of a fix either IMHO.

@bryncoles

Did you modify your xorg.conf i.e. as a workaround for the Intel driver performance loss? In case you still wanna try Compiz would you - at a freeze - press "alt-sysreq-k" many times (5-10) and wait 1 or 2 minutes? Sometimes I have to wait for the above described reaction, too.

Same situation - freeze!

Surfing the site spiegel.de with *firefox* and watching a video with *gmplayer* and the systems freezes.

I might have to tell that I'm using the Flashblock plugin in version 1.5.10. This time a got the system to this stage here: http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1303 . Wasn't able to get any farer.

Similar situation - freeze!

Surfing the site youtube.de with *firefox* and watching a video with
*gmplayer* and the systems freezes again.

_It's getting reproducible!_

Btw and in case that's interesting: This time here
http://pkqs.net/~cf/small-IMG_1305 I chose "Run Ubuntu in low graphics
mode..." and another X-Session was started on :1 (CTRL+ALT+F9) with dri
enabled but with a software renderer.

$ glxinfo |grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

I can recreate a freeze!!!

1) Open firefox and surf to that site:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnRHItFtlxY

Be sure to have the right Flashplugin installed (for version numbers -
see above). Play the video.

2) Start gmplayer and play a video in parallel that's as close as
possible to these characteristics:

$ file <that video>
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD,
audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

I'd just try an XviD coded avi video.

3) While both videos (flash and avi) are playing go back to the browser
window and scroll up and down very fast - faster than the window content
is redrawn.

On my system that reproducibly causes the described freezes. I just had
10 freezes in 10 minutes. That's of course only one way of reproduction.
I'm pretty sure one can also reproduce that behavior with Compiz' scale
feature or other things.

I tried very hard without the running avi video in parallel - that did
not cause any freeze.

Christian.

alt-sys-k doesnt respond straight away, nor every time. in fact. i heard about the potential for modifying xorg, but i dont wanna mess with that shizzle. so i installed the proposed xorg update, but it still freezes on me, which is when i said 'buggers to compiz'. im off compis until this issue is fixed.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 with the Intel 945GM, and I'm also experiencing freezes. They have been intermittent over the past month since upgrading to Jaunty (I haven't had these issues on previous releases). Today they have become a lot more frequent (like every 30 minutes - hour). Perhaps that's something to do with the ImageMagick bug/security fixes out today?

In any case, I attach my dmesg, lspci and syslogs, as well as my dpkg.log in the following posts.

I'm working in Eclipse and Firefox mainly as this happens. In particular it seems that menus in Eclipse cause the freeze - although that's just conjecture. None of the ctrl+alt+del etc. work (although REISUB does). The freeze causes all keyboard interaction to fail, and the only mouse interaction which works is movement (not clicking).

Many of my experiences mirror those in bug 355155, although this bug seems more specific to my situation.

An even easier way of reproducing this freeze (on my system):

1) Start gmplayer and play a video that's as close as possible to these characteristics:

$ file <that video>
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD,
audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)

I'd just try an XviD coded avi video.

2) Start Nautilus. Go to a directory with many files in it - so there's an already quite small scrollbar. Scroll up and down very fast -> Freezes my system.

So this is *not Flash related*. It seems (besides other things) Scroll-related.

Christian.
