Bug Description
System with Intel 945GM freezes randomly
Somebody might say this is a duplicate of this bug here: https:/
With Jaunty
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
my *Gnome* desktop freezes randomly - I have *Compiz* activated. That did not occur with Intrepid. A *memtest* does not find any problems - it ran almost for 24 hours. During a freeze my mouse still moves so it's not a complete system freeze anyway. My laptop is a Lenovo X60s.
The typical situation is (AFAIR) not related to Compiz' scale feature as I wrote in the other bug report before. All I can say for sure is that the last 5 times it happened was while I was watching a video with *gmplayer*. The video has these characteristics:
$ file <that video>
RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 624 x 352, 23.98 fps, video: XviD, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)
At the same time I was surfing these two websites using firefox:
www.spiegel.de
www.amazona.de
$ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.10, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2009 mozilla.org
These sites contain flash and I have adobe's flash plug-in installed:
$ dpkg -l | grep adobe
ii adobe-flashplugin 10.0.22.87-2jaunty1 Adobe Flash Player plugin version 10
While the laptop is frozen I can't
- leave X and switch to a real console (tty1)
- press CAPS or NUM LOCK...
- SSH on that machine
During one of the last freezes I had a camera in grabbing range. I tried the key combo "alt-sysrq-k". It took about 30s and this happened: Screen is black with a thick blue stripe on the right side. See here http://
"(EE) intel(0): Failed to set tiling on front buffer: rejected by kernel".
See here http://
After thinking a little about that line here:
"(EE) intel(0): Failed to set tiling on front buffer: rejected by kernel"
I remembered that I manually added some proposed lines to my xorg.conf that I read about in a Howto dealing with that Intel driver performance loss - see here: https:/
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
Option "EXAOptimizeMig
Option "MigrationHeuri
Option "Tiling" "true"
EndSection
I removed the lines dealing with "Tiling" and "MigrationHeuri
Some information that I won't attach as files:

i was on your other bug report but ill post here too, since i am running an intel chipset too, on a dell inspiron 1525n. the laptop was preinstalled with ubuntu (7:10), so all the hardware should work fine and be compatible with open standards. the laptop was upgraded through 8:4, 8:10 and now 9:4. previous incarnations of ubuntu all worked fine for me. im rocking 32bit architecture.
i also get system freezes, where the mouse still responds. ctrl-alt-backspace (whihc i dontzapped) doesnt recover the system, and alt-sysreq-k takes me to a black screen where i have to hard-reset anyway. keyboard is unresponsive otherwise.
the freeze happened while watching flash video's in firefox, but also when switching work-spaces, when hotplugging peripherals, when using the scale plug in... basically, its unpredictable when it will happen. im lucky though as i only freeze about twice a week.
i have now turned compiz off, and am running metacity as the windows manager. this appears to have stopped me getting freezes, but i dont consider turning off services much of a bug fix. i know that theres an ugly fix with upgrading to RC kernels, but thats not much of a fix either IMHO.
