I can confirm this bug. After trying on 3 machines and 6 different drives. The cd fails to boot. However, on my inspiron 5100 I have no problem booting and kubuntu is running fine. This must be with specifically the Kubuntu cd as I have tried the Ubuntu version and it as done flawlessly. My machines range from an athlon 950mhz to my main desktop on an athlon64 3000+ If I can be of anymore help please ask.

Install CD for PC (Intel x86) computers (standard download)

 * Insert CD into (DVD+-RW) drive
 * Restart system
 * Computer checks CD drive for bootable CD
 * Doesn't find bootable CD, boots off next device

The files on the CD are readable from within Ubuntu itself.

What is the last message on boot you get? Does any of the boot options work?

I just get the typical "Failure" message when the box tries to boot from CD. No other messages at all.

I can confirm this bug. CD won't boot on my nforce2 desktop system on the Samsung DVD-Rom or the Plextor CD/RW.
I burned the CD several times with safe settings, both from a download made with bittorrent and one "regular" download, and with three different CD brands. I also checked md5sums and CD integrity meticiously.
The same CDs boot on my neighbour's ACER laptop.
Other bootable CDs work fine here.

I'm convinced it's some sort of bug that could and should be corrected.

Sorry for the double post. Forgot one thing:

@ Holbach:
There are no error messages. The CDs are treated just like non-bootable CDs, so the messages appearing would be dependent on the bios. Here it tells me it tries to boot from CD in the same way it would with any non-bootable CD, before booting the system from the harddrive.

The CD will boot on some systems and not on others. When it fails to boot, the computer behaves just as if a non-bootable CD was in the drive.

I analysed an offending CD and found no problems with the data track or disc surface, a valid checksum, and the CD was even flagged as bootable.

Same problem here. Flight 5 boots fine, for Flight 6 the BIOS just prints "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM : Failure ..." and continues with the next boot medium (i.e. HDD).

Same thing for me : I burn the image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/dapper/flight-6/dapper-install-i386.iso
on a CD (tryed diffirent blank disks brands). The CD boot perfectly on my vaio notebook and also on the compaq notebook of my girlfriend but it won't boot on my two desktop computers (a Shuttle mini PC with a Pentium III on a FV25 motherboad and a Dual Celeron PC with an ABIT BX6 motherboard). I tried 3 different CD players and it's always the same message "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM : Failure ..."
Other CDs boot correctly.

I'm getting the same problem with flight 6, in that the media is treated like it is non bootable and just skips to grub for my breezy install. The live CD boots just fine.

ralvy, can you please try the beta cd?

After reading a couple of threads on the forum about the beta, I think I'll pass on this for now. People are having serious hard drive trashing with it.

During boot it can't cause hard drive trashing :)

Point taken. The new beta boots fine. The previous Live CD Dapper also boot fine before. It was always the Install CD that had the problem.
