i solved my problem updating my Kernel
at first i installed ubuntu 8.10, and my web-cam (microsoft vx-1000) didn't work, i tried updating to 9.10, but still didn't work
so... i went back to 8.10, and updated my kernel to the 6.12.29 version. My camera started to work, not as good as on vista, but it was good enough.
On the time that i was using my pc (i had some hardware problems and it's not with me right now) i had no problems after updating my kernel, and ubuntu was as stable as possible.

you can find a lot of info about how to update your kernel, on google. It's as simple as possible.

i don't have the exact tutorial that i used. This is the link of one tutorial that i found, and i think it's very similar to the one i used:
http://www.ramoonus.nl/2009/06/10/linux-kernel-2-6-30-installation-guide-for-ubuntu-and-debian-linux/

and this is the link of the different kernels that you can download from ubuntu: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

after updating the kernel i don't remember if i had to re install/compile all the drivers that i had downloaded previously, i probably did.
ps.: I only had one problem. When i updated my kernel it asked me to install one program, that i didn't have and i don't remember what was, but i just searched for it on the synaptic, installed, and it installed the kernel after that.

Problem is still there in Ubuntu 9.10 RC.
- I tested it on 28-Oct-2009
- I'm using Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop
- Only operating system insatlled is Ubuntu 9.10 RC
- Only 2 additional application installed after the default installation were Cheese and Skype 2.1 beta.
- I tried to open Skype using: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype but it did not help
- Both Cheese and Skype detect the webcam but they both disply 'green screen'

Have a /dev/video0, but is shows a green screen with some static in the top. The LED in the VX1000 is turning on when you try a video preview though, so something is working.

Solved!

I followed instructions posted by SuperMau and can confirm that it is working. Tested with Skype 2.1.0.47 and Cheese.

I can confirm that 'noreturn' hint works. For the first time, I had vx-1000 working in Linux.

I am still curious about 1) when this solution is going to be integrated into Ubunto; 2) exactly what does it fix
