Bug Description

Hello all together.

I have a really serious problem: My system randomly freezes.

i have a ubuntu jaunty running on a lenovo t500 (laptop).
i have two graphic cards, but only the onboard intel is (by bios) activated.

so, i am using xserver-xorg-video-intel.
i activated jaunty-proposal, so i have got a fairly new version.

there are different types of freezes (i think):

TYPE 1: nothing works anymore. when i press something on the keyboard or use the mouse, the system shows no reaction. not even the keyboard lights can be switched on (i think this is managed by the bios).

TYPE 2: nearly nothing works anymore. the system reacts to neither keyboard nor mouse input. but i can toogle the keyboard lightning.

TYPE 3: nothing except the mouse is working. i can move the mouse around, but clicking has no effect. i can't toogle keyboard lightning as well.

TYPE 4: only the mouse is working, but the keyboard lightning is also working.

TYPE 5: the mouse and keyboard isn't working. but rhythmbox keeps playing in the background. i haven't tested yet whether the keyboard lights can be toogled.

The freezes occur randomly. but i can sometimes force them, when i am watching all my screensavers (skyrocket or so). but then, the system freezes while noone is working on it.
i even got freezes while working with firefox.

i have (perhaps) more detailed descriptions here:
http://forum.proggen.org/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=626 (GERMAN)

reverting the intel driver hasn't brought any success, nor has switching off DRI or using MigrationHeuristik greedy.

please help me! if you need any logfiles, the tell me.

Hi! I have the same problem, although I am not technical enough to know where to dig to figure it out. I have found though that some programs are more likely to cause this issue: any flash animation in firefox using nonfree (though not in Opera), and as you say, the animated screensavers (in my case glslideshow).

A system left alone will sometimes restart the session - I come back and it's sitting at the login box of GDM! Resume from suspend is totally unreliable and fails 1 in 4 times, roughly. Whatever the gremlin is is also able to kill the wireless.

I think this is either a javascript issue or an adobe flash issue. I read in another bug listing that there might be a relationship with the bluetooth service (particularly with suspend/resume problems).

Crashes for me are every few hours of use. Am seriously contemplating changing distro's because this is becoming unworkable, but I am so hoping it gets fixed because I am so used to Ubuntu now.

I have recently installed the alpha version of Adobe Flash 64bit which has improved stability, but the pattern of crashes is now exactly as reported by Dirty Oerty.

The last line of a few of my gdm log files has this:

(EE) intel(0): Failed to initialize kernel memory manager
X: ../../src/i830_driver.c:2923: i830_init_bufmgr: Assertion `pI830->FbBase != ((void *)0)' failed.

and in another session:
X: ../../src/i830_batchbuffer.h:78: intel_batch_emit_dword: Assertion `pI830->batch_ptr != ((void *)0)' failed.

It may be significant because after this gdm reset and my session was lost.
Also am attaching Xorg.0.log.

Hello Dantroline :)

I managed to stop the freezes for me.
First, i installed the 64 bit flash player from the adobe website.

Next, there was some work to do with the graphics.
Just follow these instructions:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582

i am currently running the "bleeding edge" config, and it never crashed or did anything wrong.

reading your last post, i would guess that the fixmtrr script (see link above) will be necessary for you!

I have gone bleeding edge as you have, with scripts added - from here on i obviously wont be reporting bugs in launchpad - so far so good though, but I will run the laptop for a few days straight to check its stability. Perhaps we've found the holy grail of stability on the new Intel graphics cards... and on a T500! ... fingers crossed.

Hi there
Sorry for not answering for such a long time.

For me, the bug is not reproducible with the latest lucid installation. Currently, i am running a standard ubuntu lucid installation (minimal) with no changes to kernel or affected parts of the system.

Because of that, I think the bug is no longer present.
