Bug Description

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit version). I'm running it on a Dell 1310 Vostro laptop.

For the first couple dozen boot ups all was fine. Now, periodically, my keyboard and mousepad freeze at the log-in screen (from a fresh boot). I'm not using an external keyboard or mouse. Even when I manually power down and then reboot, they stay frozen. My only work around is to reboot and select recovery mode in Grub then choose the continue normal boot process. This leads to a log in screen with normal keyboard and mouse function.

It is possible to use the keyboard and mouse if the power cord is connected to the laptop.
They continue working once the laptop has booted with the power cord connected and it is unplugged.

UPDATE:
It appears that the keyboard/mouse freeze is related to the wireless radio. If I have it switched on at boot up, then the freeze happens. If I have it switched off at boot up, then I don't seem to get a freeze. And no, the power cord doesn't make a difference.

Same problem here, with the same laptop. (well, a Vostro 1720, but close enough)

I just found this post on the forums. Not sure if it will work in the longer term for me, (since it happens randomly for me), but here's hoping.

Perhaps that option should be added by default to anyone with a 8042 wireless card? Seems harmless enough.

I have a Vostro 1520 that has the same problem. At first it happened just once in awhile not it see it might take 4-5 boots to be able to login. The system though looking like it is frozen I don't think it really is, if you press the power button the system starts shutting down and when it remove the GUI screen you can see some of the letters for the user id that had been typed in. I tried typing the entire user id and hitting enter to see if it would go to the pw screen but it did not.

This was a clean install of Jaunty amd64 using ext4 for both / & home. dell 1397 wifi card

Haven't tried switching off the wifi yet.

Turned wireless radio off and still had the problem running on battery.
Turned wireless radio on and plugged in the power cord and it booted fine

I did the fix suggested from the link Dave provided :

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1172261&highlight=vostro&page=2

Essentially, you modify your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. So far, it appears to be working. I've booted with my wifi on and haven't had the keyboard/mouse freeze. I'll report again later if the fix continues to work.

Upgraded to karmic beta a few days ago and it appears that this has been corrected in this version.
