Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Following the initial install of Ubuntu 8.10 on this Lptop no sound of any kind was available.

OK Done my best to comply
Found Website
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting?action=show&redirect=DebuggingSoundProblems
and worked my way though this as best as I could.
The results of the various Terminal queries and responses are listed in the attached openOffice.org document.
I think from this that my soundcard is not supported!?
Can you have a look and see what you think please?
As I say in the attachment I am a newcomer to Ubuntu and so have not the expertize to understand all of the Terminal query output.
I am very impressed by 9.01and will use this operation system from now on, but I would dearly love to hear some sound off thius laptop.
(Sound is working fine on my old ACER Travelmate 2420 which I have als updated to 9.1)
THank for you help,

It would seem that I have a Driver Version : Release v1.0.18rc3

If I look for any references for the Codec reference Realtek ALC883
all I find is this (which again is not quite what I expected going by the SoundTroubleshoot site)
