Wi-fi function broken after installing Kubuntu Jauntu and KDE 3.5

OS: Kubuntu Jaunty Jauntelope 9.04
DE: KDE 3.5.10
System: Dell Inspiron 1300
Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
Wi-fi functionality is disabled after upgrade to Kubuntu Jaunty and KDE 3.5.10. The upgrade was from Kubuntu Hardy Heron.
Unable to activate wireless card via system settings -> network settings, or by typing the command "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up." The latter gives the following output in the terminal:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported
The 'dmesg' command reports that the incorrect firmware has been installed:
