Inspiron 1520 mute key causes mute in notification but not panel

Bug Description

With an Intel 82801H STAC92xx Analog sound device in a Dell Inspiron 1520 in Jaunty with Alsa drivers, pressing the mute button on the front of the laptop causes the system sound to mute and the notification to pop up saying so however the mute icon does not appear in the Volume Applet in gnome panel and clicking on the Volume Applet shows the 'mute' checkbox unticked.

This worked in Hardy and earlier.
