Message "unable to enumerate USB device on port 8" spammed on command line.

In the last few days I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04. This bug definitely did not occur under 8.04.

During startup, when all the normal [ Starting GNOME Display Manager ] type messages appear, they are interspersed with the repeated complaint:

[ <number>] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 8

where <number> is of the form ##.###### e.g. 85.013541 and increases by approximately 01.000000 every 4 messages.

I am able to log into Ubuntu normally, and my system is essentially functional - in particular, my USB devices function normally.

HOWEVER, when I press 'Ctrl+Alt+F1' to go to the command prompt the messages continue making this form of accessing a command prompt near-unusable.

I am reasonably certain this message is the result of a hardware failure somewhere along the line. The bug I am reporting is the software's inability to recover gracefully from the hardware error.

I'm having the same problem after updating to kubuntu karmic koala 9.10. When I press 'Ctrl+Alt+F1' i can always see this message:
"Unable to enumerate USB device on port 2".

This definitely only seems to be an issue for me on 9.10 and not 9.4. As well as the symptoms here I have a few USB devices which worked before upgrading and don't now - am looking for specific bug reports now.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

I was having the same issue, but I wanted to let you all know how I fixed it. I hope that this will fix your issue as well. I had a defective USB hub plugged into my computer, which caused Ubuntu to display the "unable to enumerate" error. You all might want to check for defective USB devices.

Chris - I always assumed there was a hardware problem. The point of this bug report was to suggest that Ubuntu deal sensibly with the hardware problem by posting a single error message somewhere, rather than getting stuck in an infinite loop of error-message posting.

But yes, anyone seriously troubled by this error would probably be advised to check their hardware.

I think the original reporter, Tillanz and myself are both fairly confident that the root cause is defective USB hardware in some way. The problem is really that the defective hardware makes the console unusable.

At least in my case removing the defective hardware is not really an option since it's a laptop with internal usb hardware.

Uncommenting 'kernel.printk = 4 4 1 7' in /etc/sysctl.conf doesn't seem to have any effect on silencing the messages, but a bit more googling on my part might come up with another way of silencing them I guess.

The same problem is still there with the lucid RC btw. I'm also finding that having lots of messages printed to the console also seems to affect suspending the machine, but not consistently.

Not that it will do anything to fix the bug, but you can always just press Ctrl+Alt+F2, etc., to access other command prompts that shouldn't receive this default output.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my media pc, and this is making it completely unusable. Is there no way I can bypass this error message and boot Ubuntu without taking the USB ports out?

I don't think this is a duplicate with 256767. As far as I get it, this bug report is about disabling the messages, not getting the device to work.
In my case, I have an sdcard reader on a laptop - since I don't use the SD storage anyway, I turn it off in the BIOS (or in /sys/devices/platform/eeepc/cardr, same thing).
HAL does not need to tell me constantly that it can't communicate with a device that certainly exists, but that is disfunctional (in this case, turned off). Once is completely sufficient.
