ATI Radeon HD 3670 Proprietary FGLRX Drivers break Suspend, Hibernate and major performance issues.

Running on a Jaunty Jackalope daily builds from a couple of days after the beta was released I am unable to resume from sleep and hibernation. It seems most of the process goes fine but when the gray password box is shown there is an error. I can see the box and the brighter field where I am supposed to enter my password but it seems frozen in the middle of initializing because it has no distinct border (the text box looks disabled). It seems that it doesn't even respond to keyboard input because ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't do anything either (yes I activated this function already).

I cannot see anything strange in the log files but I am also not sure what to look for and where but I'd be happy to post if you give me indication on what to check.

I now think I know what causes this problem. I installed from from scratch with the final release of Jaunty and at first it seems the problem had disappeared until I activated the proprietary graphics driver for my ATI card to be able to use desktop effects such as Compiz and AWN. Now the problem has reappeared and it seems it also causes some other problems:

- The screen switcher (on the integrated keyboard) button no longer works, without the driver it correctly switches between external/laptop and cloned screens when I press this button. With the driver installed the screen only goes blank for a second before returning in the same mode as previously.
- Setting resolution etc. in Display Preferences gets generally unreliable and when I start it with a second screen connected hangs while using ~100% CPU of one core. Without external screen connected (VGA - I havent tried DVI) it works fine to start it and change resolution.
- Some times the screen goes blank when games through wine change the resolution.

The graphics card is 512MB ATI Radeon HD 3670 and I can't find any more details for the driver except the name in the proprietary drivers app: "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver".

If you need any further information, let me know, I just want get this to work as soon as possible...

I have now done some further research and also tested ATI's 9.5 driver from their homepage. It seems that this driver fixes some issues and breaks others. The sleep problem has gone away when using metacity as window manager but is still present with compiz (I cannot be 100% sure I tried this in metacity before although I will likely go back soon and so will check it again). In other words I should probably report this to compiz devs instead.

The performance issues (so mild I hardly noticed) seem to have worsened with 9.5 from ATI and my computer even hung twice with a blank screen. Again, seems to be compiz-only issue.

What is still a big issue is the multiple screens handling. This behavior is the same in metacity and compiz but is also very different with the 9.5 driver I installed a couple of days ago. The keyboard button to toggle clone desktop/switch to extended desktop now seems to try to do the correct things and at least cloning works. Other settings are very buggy and I am unable to do any changes in the "Display" application in preferences with multiple screens. Most commands time out saying there was no reply. So it seems this driver is not well supported still...

What is most likely to be fixed - support for the ATI proprietary driver that ships with ubuntu or improved support for newer ones such as the 9.5? Trying to sort out where to put my trouble shooting efforts.

I am running 9.04 final release.

Upon removing the proprietary ATI FGLRX driver, the problem with resuming from suspend goes away.

I have not knowingly done this, so if it's not included in the release it was some other program that required it and so it was installed as a dependency.

When Proprietary FGLRX Drivers are activated, major problems with ATI HD 3670. Running clean install of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackelope with all updates as of MAY-05-2009.

When attempting to resume from suspend or hibernate, the system hangs showing a black screen and a cursor. Cursor and all commands are unresponsive.

Simple 2D window performance is very bad. Maximizing windows or opening new ones takes a lot of time, however minimizing them does not. The minimize action is not very fluid, however.

Deactivating the proprietary drivers causes all these issues to be resolved, but there is obviously no 3D acceleration then.

One reporter showed linux-restricted-modules-2.6.28 but source pkg would not appear in search so put 2.6.24

I've recently had a lot of problems with the proprietary ATI drivers and I think I've also seen this bug. My system is a HP EliteBook 6930p with a Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series graphics card.

If the people experiencing this bug are running Xinerama, it could be related to bug 355841, which also affected me. (As this prevented me from even logging in, I've used the free drivers since then, but have experienced other issues there...)

I too am having these very problems on this very configuration. When I try to wake up after a suspend or a hibernate, I get stuck at a screen that has the outline of the login window, without any text. I've tried all manner of key combos, and nothing will let me proceed -- I just have to do a hard shutdown and restart. Looking at the pm-suspend log, it claims that all went smoothly in thawing from hibernate.

My hardware is the same as above - XPS Studio 1640 with ATI Radeon driver. However, unlike many of the reports above, my proprietary driver has already been disabled, and I still can't wake up after a suspend or hibernate.

Any more ideas on what I might be able to do to resolve this? I'm sort of stuck dual booting until I can find a way to resolve this.

You shouldn't need to disable the ATI driver. It is possible this problem has more to do with Compiz than FGLRX, as discussed here:

Try disabling all desktops effects, or try running "metacity --replace" at a terminal. Suspend/Resume should work OK after that.

Yep, you're right. After disabling all effects, I am able to restart after
suspend.

I can confirm this problem (Radeon HD 3670 in a Dell Studio XPS 16).

I can also confirm that this is related to Compiz. Is there already a Compiz bug report for this issue?

I've hit this too - Dell XPS Studio 16, Radeon HD 3670. Here's what I've found:

Without fglrx installed - Suspend, hibernate and Resume work fine
With fglrx installed - Suspend, hibernate and Resume work fine
With fglrx installed and compiz active - No resume from suspend or hibernate
With fglrx installed, compiz not active, but playing Tux Racer - No resume from suspend or hibernate

It seems that when fglrx is actively displaying 3d images, it'll prevent a successful resume. I've tried Tux racer at the menu and actually playing, with the same results.

It seems then that this problem is NOT related to compiz.

In my case, installing fglrx 9.8 from the amd website (after uninstalling ubuntu fglrx driver in restricted driver manager) did the trick. Xorg no longer freeze when playing a video and it correctly resume from suspend. So this might be fixed in karmic or next release, once ubuntu will add latest fglrx in repositories.

I'm suffering from same problem. The card I have is Mobility Radeon HD 4650, model of laptop is HP Pavilion dv7 2180us
System status: fglrx is loaded and compiz is being used. Latest xorg drivers are installed from PPA. Latest ATI driver is installed from ATI website (along with Catalyst Center)
Problems are:
1. frequent freeze of the system. i have to hard-reboot each time, even magic syssrq key combination does not work. I keep my fingers crossed so that freeze does not happen in the middle of something important.
2. suspend: machine can go to sleep but cannot awake, black screen of death (BSOD)
3. hibernate works fine (can awake successfully) but that affects video4linux driver and webcam becomes not accessible.

Thank you for reporting this issue about a driver from the
linux-restricted-modules package. lrm-2.4.24 was shipped with Ubuntu
8.04 which reached end-of-life for desktop support on May 12th, 2011.

For that reason, this bug report is being closed at this time. I'm
marking it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue,
but there are no plans to work on lrm 2.4.24 bugs further.

The issue may be resolved in a newer version. If not, aside from filing
a new bug report, another angle may be to file it directly with the
driver vendor.
