Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

We have several users here who use thunderbird rather than evolution. They have it set as their mail reader in System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications. In Intrepid, when they used the 'send <document> as email' option in OpenOffice, it opened thunderbird. After upgrading to Jaunty beta, they report that it tried to start Evolution. Digging into 'Tools -> Options -> Internet', it seems OpenOffice now defaults to 'sensibleooo-mua' which we don't appear to ship?

I see the patch that apparently is responsible for this in 3.0.1, but I still need to find out why it worked properly for 2.4.1

As best as I can tell this patch has not changed since at least 2.4.1 (hardy/intrepid) so I have no idea how OOo ever sent email via Thunderbird. Maybe it only falls back to using Thunderbird if Evolution (/usr/bin/evolution) is not installed?

I think I should be able to safely convert it over to using 'xdg-email' which will use the default mail application.

I talked to the Debian maintainer as well and he isn't sure how it would have ever worked to automatically open Thunderbird. Also from what I can see I am not sure if using xdg-email would work for Thunderbird since they apparently do weird things for attachments, from what I have read online. I will try to setup a test environment to make sure that switching over to xdg-email will work, but as a work around until then just put 'thunderbird' in that dialog as you have already.

Thanks,

Chris

I have the same problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04: when I choose "Files --> Send --> Document as email" it now opens evolution instead of my mail program "Thunderbird". In the "preferred applications" is Thunderbird selected, so OO should use THunderbird and not evolution.

In ubuntu 8.10 this worked properly.
Thanks,
Markus

Having the same problem (i.e. Evolution started instead of prefered emailer set in Ubuntu, i.e. Thunderbird), I did some tests with xdg-email replacing sensible-ooomua as the OOo emailer (in the option menu), without any success. OOo gives me an error message saying that it can't find a valid program to perform the operation. xdg-email works well when issued in a terminal though... Maybe some parameters must be used with xdg-email to make it work in OOo...

I have the same problem with Thunderbird and Evolution on 9.04. The work-around of PietroB worked for me, but I think it is not the best solution.

As #3 Chris Cheney already suggested, simply typing 'thunderbird' in "Tools -> Options -> Internet -> E-Mail" works fine for me.
