XBMC crashes at startup

Bug Description
I've made sure that OpenGL is working correctly, glxgears works correctly. I've also assured that 3d rendering is enabled. Compiz is turned off and it still doesn't work. I'm having this same problem with Boxee which makes me believe that it is a system-wide issue.

Well Boxee is actually a fork of XMBC, so the fact that they both suffer the same problem doesn't prove much. But anyway, if I'm not mistaken, xbmc is not actually in the Ubuntu archive. As such, it's not an Ubuntu bug.
