Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Thunderbird runs fine, I am using it as a replacement for now, the problem seems confined to evolution. When evolution is launched from the Applications->Internet menu, the desktop is frozen sometimes appears corrupt - strange colours, etc. The system monitor in the taskbar usually stops updating when this happens. Tried deleting the .evolution folder and rebooting, evolution still hangs. <CTL><ALT><BS> is unable to restart the X server. The hang happens 100% of the time. I am fully up to date with jaunty patches as of today on the affected machine. ( Feb. 23/09 )

Versions: Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha Evolution 2.25.91 Kernel 2.6.28-8 generic
CPU: Phenom X2 (4 Gigabytes of RAM)
Using recommended NVidia closed source X driver (Version 180)

Any attachments, logs or other information that would help diagnose it?

thank you for your bug report, do you get the issue every time and only using evolution? could you add you /var/log/messages /var/log/syslog /var/log/Xorg.0.log to the bug after getting the issue?

Please see attached files from the affected machine.

The bug still happens 100% of the time with evolution, thunderbird is ok. Sometimes the screen is painted partially or fully black except for the toolbar a few seconds after launching evolution. The mouse and keyboard are unresponsive.

I tried it once more after removing nullmailer, (I didn't need it, and it wasn't set up properly and was leaving a lot of messages in the logs) and saw the desktop is solid black after starting evolution except for the title bar, with its open system monitor windows not updating. This time the cursor responded to mouse movement, but clicking on anything or typing <CTL><ALT><BS> to restart X failed.

The other other similar behavior I have discovered is with the screensaver - I don't know if it is related, but when the screensaver activates the machine does not respond to either keyboard or mouse and must be rebooted. Also, the System->Preferences->Screensaver window cannot be closed, and the window does not respond to mouse clicks. I must kill the screensaver setup window with the "force quit" item I added to the toolbar. I was going to file this as a separate bug, but maybe the root cause of both is something wrong in the X server that evolution is simply triggering. I have never seen <CTL><ALT><BS> fail on me before....

there is nothing obvious in this log, at what time did you get the hang? unassigning from evolution since whatever it does the desktop should not hang, either xorg or linux get confused there

Happens 100% of the time when I launch evolution on the test machine. It may actually be an X bug, but whatever evolution is doing seems to trigger it.

I have some more information - the bug goes away when I uninstall the (Recommended) NVidia version 180 driver, and evolution works fine. The desktop is ugly and low res without it, but at least it doesn't hang every 20 minutes, as it has now been tending to do.

The problems with Evolution were clearly a red herring - the problem is with X windows, specifically the version 180 driver. I will try again with the older version 173 driver and see what happens...

One more update - looks like the older NV173 driver does not show the problem. It only shows up with the version 180 display driver.

I too have random screen corruption with nvidia driver 180 or 177 . Sometimes it happens after entering the desktop, sometimes it starts right after login and desktop never reaches full loading.
Corruption of screen starts with icons, they have white vertical stripes. Sometimes the mouse cursor is corrupted, sometimes it has a square large ugly bitmap attached to it (the mouse arrow).
All of these are happening with sudden lockups every 5-10 seconds, and harddisk crunching like heavy swapping.
I attached 2 screenshots of corrupted gtk controls and desktop icons.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release (10.04)? Thanks in advance.

I don't have this issue anymore with Lucid Lynx.

I have long since upgraded, so this doesn't affect me anymore. I am amazed that somebody has gotten around to it only now.

I'm closing this bug since both of you have confirmed that this bug was fixed with an update.

No, I didn't mean to be - I am just surprised at the sudden attention to this out of the blue. The truth is I had actually moved on and forgotten about it. I'm surprised it wasn't closed ages ago. Yes, it is a good thing it is fixed.

By the way, I apologize if it seemed I was being abrupt - I really appreciate it being looked at, the timing was just surprising because this was 2 releases ago, and I have filed a few bugs under Lucid which haven't been attended to. (Though I am sure they have much bigger fish to fry)
