Bug Description

I use the trackpad quite a lot and this morning, I updated the computer. After I rebooted, it didn't work. I'm not sure what package could have caused this. It's a bit of a pain to have to use the spacebar, but I'm doing it anyway.

I'm just posting it here so the community knows about it. If I find a fix I'll post it. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there with this problem.

System Info:
Dell Inspiron 1525n
Kernel Linux 2.6.28-5-generic

I have been using Jaunty for a while. This is the first time the trackpad has zonked out on me.

I can confirm this bug. My trackpad doesn't work, either (since yesterdays upgrades).

I found the problem: For some reason the package xserver-xorg-input-synaptics was deinstalled during the update procedure. I have no idea how or why this happened. So just reinstall this package and your touchpad should work again.

Philipp, it says it's already installed on mine. Thank you for your response, but still no luck.

This bug didn't have a package associated with it, so I'll file it under xorg for now.

Ok, nothing jumps out at me in those attachments, can you also please attach

and
   /etc/X11/xorg.conf

then just copy and paste the output of
   apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Thanks again.

Thanks Bobby. I really don't understand why your pad isn't working, can you please check that it is enabled from System->Preferences->Mouse --> Touchpad tab.
My alpha-3 install of Jaunty doesn't have an xorg.conf, so let's try removing yours and let auto detection take full effect. Please run
   sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
Then restart X. Does the touchpad work now?

Did everything and it still doesn't work. *sigh* What could this be? Anyone with an idea pls feel free to share. Smile. And my System > Preferences > Mouse > Touchpad tab was checked.

By the way I see that there is an update to the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics which Timo filed the bug under (beat me to it!), the latest in Jaunty is now
   0.99.3-1ubuntu2
Please also update your system, check that you have this upgrade included, and restart X to see if the problem disappears. Thanks.

I have a few questions to clarify your response. Do you mean that you are able to click the physical buttons at the bottom, or that you are able to tap the pad to create the same functionality of a mouse click? When you say you can't scroll, do you mean you can't scroll down pages using the edge of the touchpad, or you can't move the pointer around the screen?

Ooooohhh, when you said that the trackpad crashed and "didn't work", I was under the impression that you couldn't use it at all. I have seen similar behavior, can you please check bug 321022 and see if that is the same problem you are having? If so, I will mark on as a duplicate of the other. Thanks.

Sorry, it is not a duplicate. My trackpad doesn't scroll at all. After the update, even.

Did you check bug 320639 which that other one has since been marked as a duplicate of? There are also two others of interest listed in the bug, it would be good if you can have a look through them. There have been lots of problems with touchpads in the latest Jaunty updates, but everybody seems to have a slightly different complaint about the symptoms.

Since there should be enough information here, I'll mark this bug as triaged so a developer can look at it. Thank you again for filing this report.
