Bug Description

This is a "needs packaging" bug.

Application name: Global Menu Bar for GNOME
Homepage: http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/
Installation: http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/wiki/InstallingonUbuntu
License: GPL v2

I have been using this application from its PPA for over a month on Ubuntu 8.10 and I have seen no problems or bugs. It works nicely and no longer requires a patched GTK.

I feel that having this app in the Ubuntu software repositories would be of great benefit to the Ubuntu community.

Thanks for the build. I'm currently testing it on x86. Are you on 64bits?

Yes I am on amd64.

As a friend reported, he has the same issues I have:
* empty preferences window
* no Gnome Menu
* no Icon
* oversized in width

Anyway, this should be discussed at Google Code I think.

bmhm, do you have a link to the discussion at Google code ?

Hi bmhm,

I think it is a great idea to package gnome-globalmenu for ubuntu, thank you a lot for your work on it.
But I've had a look on the ppa-packages and I had to recognize that they are unfortunately not "real" debian-packages, that means they do not obey FHS and gconf-schema is not installed properly, empty -dev and -doc packages are created etc. Furthermore gnome-globalmenu is not a native debian package, that means you'll need to create an orig.tar.gz and an diff.gz package. (at least these things are true for the intrepid package for 0.7.4 which unfortunatly is not the upstream tarball,too.) Please do not understand me wrong, I do not want to criticize your work but make suggestions to improve it.

If you don't have the time to fix it, please contact me. I've been playing around with the package recently (I've actually packaged it for myself on jaunty, but not uploaded to my ppa to not interfer with your efforts), so this shouldn't be a problem (at least for builds on << jaunty, because official tarball does not compile with vala 0.5.7. A fix would be to compile it with vala 0.6.0 on jaunty, which I can upload to my ppa if vala-team has no resources to do so).

Regards,

Gert

Hi Gert,

I'd first like to let you know that bmhm will be unavailable during the next 2 months as he has to catch up on real life.
Thus we're looking for a new Ubuntu packager , and we would greatly appreciate your help.

If you could also file bugs and/or provide patch to fix GlobalMenu so that we are Debian compliant, that ould be really great.
Our bug tracker is at http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/issues/list

Please contact us either here or on the project bugtracker if you have time to spare for GlobalMenu

Thanks,
Pierre

Hi,
please find attached the debian-folder I used to build the packages with pbuilder.

There are three packages specified, but did not specify which files shall go into which package. Therefore only the first one is being populated.

Also, please merge the manpage from google code.

Hope this helps. Licence and other information are already added.

Regards,
Ben

I've packaged gnome-globalmenu for jaunty in my ppa (https://launchpad.net/~gkulyk/+archive/ppa). Please note that this is not an official release of the gnome-globalmenu team, so please contact me if there are some problems, not the team-members.

I took the released tarball from upstream, and I've reworked the package-layout. Please test it and tell me, if everything works as expected and what you're thinking about the new layout. Help would be apreciated in improving package-descriptions - I'm not a native english speaker. When the new layout will be accepted, I'll try to get it in official team-ppa.

I had to remove the previous GlobalMenu to have the install successfully complete when I did it manually. Does the package explicitely ask to remove the legacy globalmenu ?

Btw, do not hesitate to make patch to improve the awful situation of our compatibility ith Debian packaging.
Can you post the language descriptions here so that I can have a look and try to give it a go.

Thanks for all your efforts. Please apply to the GlobalMenu team so that they can be recognized and for all the PPA uploading rights.

Running 'aptitude full-upgrade' did it for me on jaunty. No need to remove the packages I built before.
Pierre, I think it is because of a flawed postrm-script I added to one of the releases. Other users won't suffer - hopefully.

I see you reverted the naming to ~ppa1. That's how I named it initially, too. But ppl from #ubuntu-motu said, to provide packages for different releases naming would be like ~intrepid1 ~jaunty1 etc. It's not that I want to criticise your work, but its confusing to me. Everyone seems to have a different opinion. So, will there be packages for intrepid? I'm really looking forward to it.

Works very well! Thanks!

I did a mistake starting again from -0ubuntu1 - intrepid version is higher, so upgrades - at least from the intrepid package - would be difficult. I'll have to reupload a higher versioned package to ease smooth upgrades.

@bmhm:
Concerning the naming: I did not think about this package to be the one uploaded to gnome-globalmenu team ppa, it was meant for testing only, using my ppa as a playground. Concerning the packages for intrepid: yes, there will be packages for intrepid and eventually for hardy, too.

@Pierre Slamich:
The package descriptions can be found in the control file of the source package. I'll apply for team-membership.

Oh sorry... just wanted to do you a favour.
About hardy: As far as I recall there were issues about hardy's gnome version. Globalmenu switched to a different approach for modules or sth. alike, so hardy won't work anymore.

Pierre, is this true? There was some change from 0.7.2 to 0.7.3 afaik.

It is not true that hardy won't work with Global Menu.

The Global Menu applet makes use of gnome-settings-daemon to allow the user
to load/unload the Global menu gtk module on the fly.

Hardy uses gnome 2.22 or earlier when gnome-settings-daemon didn't implement
this feature. Therefore the hardy users have to manually export GTK_MODULES
variable.

This fact is also stated in README.GNOME, which will be included in the
0.7.5 release.

Latest trunk brings more compliance to debian standards , and we moreover have a PPA with fresh builds.

Would it be possible to publish those on GetDeb as the version currently published is now quite outdated?
