sound labels are wrong prevent proper headphone detection

To be honest, hardware wise I don't know what to give you so I'll just tell you the issue then include the output of lspci.
I am using a newly-purchased Acer Aspire 4530 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115500) if that helps any, link provided for specs.
I am using an Intrepid (8.10) released about a week or two ago, fully updated up to this point. Sound works through the speakers. And I was thinking that the headphones weren't working. I opened up the volume control window and tinkered with the preferences. I discovered my computer had been mis-detected. The PC Speaker volume control isn't labeled "PC Speaker" but rather as "Front" and headphones are controlled under "Surround". I would suggest some kind of installable or included application that will allow people like me to fix this mis-labeling. The mis-label also effects the way headphones are detected, I have to mute the speakers for the headphone effect.
I'm thinking the fix for this is simple but I cannot figure it out. Google isn't returning anything helpful.
I am also having other bugs with this laptop, let me know if I can post them here or if I have to create seperate reports.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
