Hi,

How did you get to this search page? The correct search page is https://help.ubuntu.com/search.html, and that appears to work correctly.

affects: ubuntu → ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu)

Thanks Matthew.

the first report was 11/2008 and I've got to this page as described, by using of course the link you provided above.
#2
now (8/2009), I need to activate javascripting for domains of help.ubuntu.com AND google.com
and this appears, e.g. keyword synaptic
https://help.ubuntu.com/search.html?cof=FORID%3A9&cx=003883529982892832976%3Ae2vwumte3fq&ie=UTF-8&q=synaptic&sa=Search

the rest of the story is bug #118730, hence the definition of 'correctly' is argueable.

Sam, I'm not 100% clear on the meaning of your comments, but I gather that you aren't encountering the problem described by the bug report anymore so I'm closing the bug.

Fine with me Matthew, since we know nothing happens anyway without javascript enabled, thanks for your time.

help.ubuntu.com/search.html should work fine without javascript enabled, we implemented a workaround for that. I think your comment on the separate bug in relation to javascript is about search.ubuntu.com, which is a different website to that discussed on this bug.

Matthew, did you try it actually?
I'm not able to reproduce what you suggest without javascript.
I insert this in a new tab, (without javascript enabled, I use noscript anyway and allow only selective)
help.ubuntu.com/search.html

Type in search field: synaptic
Result, nothing happens, the word synaptic disappears and site loads again with empty search field.
https://help.ubuntu.com/search.html?cx=003883529982892832976%3Ae2vwumte3fq&ie=UTF-8&q=synaptic&sa=Search

Attached a video of the procedure.

Sam,

Obviously when we implemented the workaround for non-javascript users it was tested. I've tested again now and I see that the workaround doesn't work for help.ubuntu.com/search.html, but that it does work for the other pages on help.ubuntu.com. Since search.html isn't really used as a standalone page, and isn't linked to from anywhere (except for this bug report), I don't think that is a problem. If that is disrupting your workflow you should open a separate bug, as I think we are agreed that this bug is not about that.

Obviously if you know how to fix it for search.html we'll upload a patch to the page.
