Bug Description

I'm running 8.10 desktop edition on a Medion Akoya MD96640, and no sound is working.

System->Preferences->Sounds has no device listed, and aplay -l outputs "aplay: device_list:215: no soundcards found...".

lspci | greb Audio outputs the following:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Bug found on 2.6.27-10-generic kernel.

Maybe https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller or https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller can help you.

If you try some of this things it would be nice if you'd write here what you did - even if it didn't help.

If you understand German http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Soundkarten_installieren/HDA may be helpful as well.

If you are adventurous you could try to get it work using OSS instead of ALSA, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound (note that Gnome's system sounds don't work with OSS, but maybe you can at least the media players getting to work).

I also had sound problems on my <a href="http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Baustelle/Medion_MD_96630">Medion MD 96630</a> Notebook. Now I can use the internal speakers:
* Add "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd probe_mask=1 " to "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base"
* sudo rmmod snd-hda-intel
* sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=medion probe_mask=1

Perhaps this will also work for you

I can't believe it, but it worked. I have sound on my laptop now, and it's so great.
I will link to your post in the thread on ubuntuforums.org about this bug, so others can get it fixed to!

The bug still exists in 8.10.
And the workaround is also working (although I don't understand why).

So should this be fixed anyway?

Well ... the workaround does only work for the speakers, not for the line out (on Medion Akoya MD 96630, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/312302)
If there is a possiblity to get the sound work or to get the speakers work out of the box it would be great.

I just want to make a quick notice on the fix that Martin Thoma posted (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/302145/comments/12) ...

I jaunty, config files has to has a .conf at the end, and the alsa-base file has therefore been renamed, so the fix is now the following:

* Add "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd probe_mask=1" to "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"
* sudo rmmod snd-hda-intel
* sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel model=medion probe_mask=1

So, it's great that we all can get sound, but what about sound in?
I thought I would start use Skype, just to try it out, talk with some friends and so on, but I can't get the front-mic to work. I have tried with all the different sound-in channels in both "sound recorder", Audacity and Skype, but neither worked.

Have any if ya' had luck with the front microphone? (maybe and external microphone is the answer? - if so, how did you do?)

@ Lupine
why are you in a hurry to close bugs which are discussed on the ubuntu forums: they do not disappeared by "magie".
Users are in pain with problems of misconfigurations in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf .
We experienced the same bug on french forum with MD 96880.
I' ll repost if the workaround works

Hi ChrisBuchholz,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 302145

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I'm currently running Karmic Alpha 5 on my laptop, and the soundcard now seems to be fully supported. The only thing I've noticed is, that as default, sound was muted, and I couldn't just un-mute it - I had to go to the soundsettings and un-mute it from there.
