OK, I deleted the mouse and keyboard sections, whole, from /etc/X11/xorg.conf,
as well as references to them. I logged out and back in to restart X. Most
everything appears to work as it did before. However, now I cannot configure
my Synaptics touchpad. I bring up System -> Preferences -> Hardware ->
Touchpad and I get a pop-up complaint
GSynaptics couldn't initialize.
You have to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics
Either the SHM line does something or GSynaptics has an intermittent failure to
operate. My experience says it could be either one.
Oddly, I was seeing this issue regularly, one or more times every day, until I reported the bug. I haven't seen it since. But I'm positive it will recur. When it does, I'll run the requested tests and gather the requested logs. Hopefully Robert will be able to reproduce this.
