Bug Description

X fails to start on 8.10 64-bit with ATI X700, while it works fine when booting the 2.6.24.21 kernel.

Removing compiz doesn't solve this.

can you please try to disable the compiz visual effects, and then try booting the 2.6.27 kernel? please tell us if this fixed the issue for you...
good luck

I also noticed, that the system sometimes also freezes with the 2.6.24 kernel, but only a few times. I cannot paste dmesg and lspci -nn of the 2.6.27 kernel because freezing occurs instantly or seconds after login.

ok, try to rename the xorg.conf file to something else and boot the 2.6.27 kernel?

No, 22985 is only about getting a black laptop screen, and nothing is frozen or crashing there.

jonijones, try adding
 Option "DRI" "off"
to the Device section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I renamed the xorg.conf as well as using the option "Try to fix x-server" in Recovery mode, but freezing still occcurrs.
I also added
 Option "DRI" "off"
to xorg.conf under Device, which led to black screens while booting with both 2.6.27 and 2.6.24 kernels.
Oh, and one bug also appeared: when activating from standby, the screen remains black and no keyboard input like ctrl-alt-del or ctrl-alt-backspace is possible.
Perhaps it has something to do with the envy-gtk package, which i had installed under 8.04 but is now deactivated with 8.10.
I'll try to Uninstall the ati-driver with envyng -t and switching back to the original.
