Bug Description

Hi,

I had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my Core 2 Duo PC with 2GB ram and Nvidia 9600GT graphics card and everything worked fine. However, I decided to upgrade to the latest version Ubuntu 8.10. Now, my Soundblaster Audigy 4 PCI soundcard will not produce any sound at all; although it works fine in Windows XP and Windows Vista. I have spent hours searching online forums, installing new drivers and using the google search engine; and have tried many suggestions without any success. The card appears to be detected and shows up in alsamixer; however changing the various controls in alsamixer makes no difference. Using the Ubuntu Audio setting GUI to change settings does not help either. Please Help.

Thanks
Peter

I have the same issue with an Audigy 2 PCI card.
The card is not detected at all, seems not to exist in hardinfo!
I will remove the card and use the on-board sound chip instead.

Hi, here is an update as of 12 November 2008

I followed the instructions given at the following link today http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=978372
Now sound works in the Chromium game on my Audigy 4 PCI sound card, although it sounds a bit odd. However, I have not been able to get the sound to work in The Kaffeine application on Freeview Digital TV yet. I will have to try some other applications/games in the next few days to see what happens in them.

Hi Peter,

Can you confirm this is still an issue with the latest pre-release of Jaunty - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/alpha-2/ . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Hi There,

Audio is now working perfectly in Ubuntu 8.10 after following the threads you suggested. The audio output of some applications has to be set in the Pulseaudio device chooser the first time the application is run; but then works perfectly.

Thanks
Peter
