Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10, Upgraded from hardy heron

AMD64x2, Onboard ATI X1250, using fglrx

3D Games in Fullscreenmode show me coloured stripes on the whole screen!

I turned compiz off but the effect is the same.

Running the affected programs as root solves the problem (but is obviously an unacceptable solution)

Same here (Ubuntu 8.10 upgraded from 8.04, ATI X1250, fglrx from oficial proprietary drivers)

This only happen whith fullscreen opengl applications, windowed opengl apps works OK (like Google Earth). 3D games runing in Wine also have that problem.

Nick Colgan (nick-colgan) wrote :

Looks like a permission problem. To workaround, run opengl application as root.

I find running Wine applications as root unacceptable. There needs to be a better way!! :(

The News say AMD and OpenSource will work together for better driver...
I hope they fix this soon ...

Adding yourself to the 'video' group seems to do the trick:
# gpasswd -a user video

Remember to restart afterwords.

I am already in video group:

But I still see color stripes instead of normal image.

Simpliest test:

mplayer -vo gl2 -fs ...

Same problem here. On-board ATI RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]. Using fglrx driver that comes with Ubuntu 8.10-amd64 . Fullscreen OpenGL programms only work when run as root. Adding myself to the 'video' group does _not_ help.

This report clearly refers to the proprietary fglrx and _not_ to the ati driver.

Oops. Binary package xorg-driver-fglrx built from fglrx-installer. Fixed to refer to that package.

I have researched a little bit this problem and it is not a permission bug. It only seems to be that.
The problem is the direct rendering.
if you disable direct rendering you can run 3D games without stripes (export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true)
It is not a permission problem because if you run with sudo direct rendering is automatically disabled (I don't known why) and that is the reason why it works with sudo. But if you run the game with the root user the problem is the same (because with root user direct rendering is enabled, like with your usual account) So it couldn't be a permission problem
With the drivers downloaded from amd's page this problem is not present (you can run 3D games with or without direct rendering with the same results, I mean without stripes)

Thanks for reporting this fglrx bug. From your report it appears you're using a chipset that AMD no longer supports with -fglrx, so we are closing this bug report as unsupported. For this hardware, it is recommended that you use the -ati video driver. If you have trouble uninstalling -fglrx and switching to -ati using normal processes, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver for troubleshooting guidance.
