i was wrong earlier: the "147a:e017 Formosa Industrial Computing, Inc." seems to be a usb infrared dongle

stellenpower, was the webcam attached to your computer when you ran the lsusb command above?

"WinFast DTV Dongle Gold BDA Device" is what Vista's "safely remove hardware" menu calls the digital TV tuner

the webcam is inside the laptop. Pressing the special webcam button (which turns it on/off under Vista) didn't make a change.

Can you confirm that the TV-tuner dongle is this one?
http://www.leadtek.com.tw/eng/tv_tuner/overview.asp?lineid=6&pronameid=231

Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.

Please paste into a comment the output of "uname -a".

Thank you

also, what is the make and model of your laptop?
