Bug Description

After upgrading from Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE4 to 8.10 the system detects that a monitor has been disconnected when there isn't one. A window pops asking me if I wish to run the configuration tool to adjust the monitor setup or to ignore it.

My system is an IBM Thinkpad R50e
lspci |grep VGA gives 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
There are also some errors in the Xorg.0.log:

I am also having the same issue. Thinkpad R50e, had the issue when I just did a distribution upgrade. I have since re-installed fresh from and 8.10 live cd. For me, I am getting a 'logout' back to the login screen, and a normal re-login thereafter. I have set the system to not require a password on X crash, and I get my network back, and Amarok reconnects to the radio station it was playing. This is happening as often as every ten minutes or so, but varies widely. I have not been able to note anything consistent about what was actually happening. It has done this without any input or other activity at all.

I will subscribe to this thread. Please let me know what I can do to help.

Kevin

I also tried re installing and nothing changed. The only error i have is the pop up window that tells me that a monitor has been connected and imediately another window that tells me that a monitor has been disconnected.

I found this at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/292761 and i think its kinda similar to our problem

I have similar problems. Window Manager keeps crashing intermittently dropping me out to the KDE login screen. Occurs most frequently when scrolling in Firefox.

Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device in a laptop. Was completley stable running every version of Kubuntu that was installed on it (Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy). Now crashes frequently with Intrepid.

Im also experiencing the visual glitch that happens when an app goes full screen.

I have searched and there are a number of other folks reporting bugs with these same error messages popping up.

My patience with an unstable KDE is at an end.. Im downgrading to Hardy later today as I cant deal with the crashes any more.

Only screen is the laptop build in screen.
Sometimes I am kicked out without warning from a KDE session. Sometimes the KDE popup "Monitor has been disconnected" appears - but clicking ignore does not help - it kicks me out of the KDE Session mercilessly.
Sometimes 100s of "Monitor has been disconnected" popups appear one after another. Clicking "Ignore" does bring the next popups - clicking nothing brings also the next popups :( But at least I have time to save the state of open programms before rebooting the machine. After rebooting I most of the time enjoy a stable KDE.
Occurs most of the time within 5 minutes after a login. A relogin does not make things better.
Rebooting is the only thing that helps.

The error does not occur on an exactly the same configured ASUS notebook with a Nvidia 7600Go GFX Card.

Did some researching and got some news:

I installed the Intel 2.5.1. driver from the ppa.launchpad.net Intel repository - it is not the newest one (as stated in my comment above) but...
The sudden disconnects from X.org are still there. So there is still a chance that version 2.6.0. of the Intel driver may solve the problem. I personally will wait until it appears inside the mentioned repository.

But better news: In this thread:

<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/292761/comments/22>

Cosmin Roman described a workaround: He disabled any other video output which xrandr is able to detect beside the LVDS (the built in Laptop screen) and this way he got (also) rid of the X crashing (so he stated this in his next comment).

Sounds logical to me - but as I sometimes need different outputs it's not a premium solution, you know :)

Greets,
Herr Irrtum

Hey Bruce..

I can install 9.04 and try again. It'll take a week or so. I still
have the laptop but it's stable on good old Hardy kde3.
