Bug Description

Upgrading from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.10 on my MT6705 Laptop, I discover that when I try to have the laptop hibernate or sleep, it locks up and never goes into the requested mode. If the laptop is unplugged the battery runs down rather quickly.

Sleep and hibernation worked just fine in Ubuntu 7.10. I have read a lot of entires on Google and know that significant changes have been made since 8.10 to the way Ubuntu handles sleep/hibernation. I even saw a few people describing this exact isuse, however no solutions. One person suggest trying a "low level sleep" as follows.

echo -n mem > /sys/power/mem

I tried running this as sudo, but it said permission denied, so i did sudo -s to become root and ran it again, then the entire system froze.

I have attached output of dmesg and lspci, however I did not see anything that struck me as odd, error wise.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Output of uname -a

Linux osiris 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Thu Oct 30 04:18:38 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I would also like to add a description of what happens. Most of the time when I try put it into sleep mode the screen goes black, and I see the scrambled blue box in the top right hand corner. The blue box is supposed to be the status of the Function keys like "Brightness" and such. At this point the computer does not stop using power, and will not resume normal operations without being hard powered off. In some instances the screen freezes as is and must be hard powered off.

Is there any news on this? I'm still having the same problem in Jaunty Jackalope (9.04).

Hi Druciferre,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 292656

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Alpha 5 today, and I can confirm that this problem no longer exists. However, it only suspends if I manually do it, or close the lid. I have configured it to go to sleep after 10 minutes, but it does not go to sleep. It just turns off the monitor.
