Bug Description

When I was upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 (with all updates) to 8.10, the upgrade program alerted me of an error with liblaunchpad-integration1, and then the computer froze. I couldn't use the keyboard or the mouse. I let the computer sit there for about an hour, and nothing happened, so I was forced to power down the computer. Upon restarting the computer, it couldn't mount the root file system (or something similar to that effect). After rebooting again, I choose the recovery option, and chose to "Fix the broken packages", and it freezes after running for about 10 minutes.

Any ideas on what I should try next?

Thanks,
-Jonathan

I'm not sure if this is related or not, but my Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.11 bootable CD doesn't work now. The CDs bring up the install menu, but once I select "Install", it starts to the load the Ubuntu progress bar, and then the progress bar freezes. My alternate 8.04 install CD isn't recognized as a bootable CD, and I also tried to use Wubi on my Windows XP partition, and it fails to load also.

What ever screwed up during the upgrade has apparently rendered my computer unable to run or re-install Ubuntu.

I've solved one of my problems. My PCI nVidia card was preventing any of the Ubuntu installers from working (even the alternate installer). Once I removed that video card, my integrated video card seemed to work fine, and the 8.04 installer worked again. However, upon trying the 8.10 installer (bootable CD), it gives me a ATA2 ErrNo -16 error and the installer stops working.

I'm using an old Dell 2350 right now, and I'm pretty sure this system hates Ubuntu (especially trying to upgrade to new versions).

I wish that the upgrade to new versions of Ubuntu would fail more gracefully. It completely destroyed my computer. =(

I've reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 on my computer, applied all updates, and upgraded to 8.10. Upon a restart, I get stuck on the following error message: This is the same error I get when tying to use the Ubuntu 8.10 live cd or install cd.

ata2: link is slow to respond
ata2: SRST failed (errno = -16)
Driver 'sd' needs updating
ata2: reset failed, giving up

Hi Jonathan,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 292378

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
