Ubuntu 8.10 : Display frequency does not list good frequencies

Bug Description
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 Inteprid Ibex ( fresh install ).
I boot and log using the default user.
The desktop starts to use incorrect ( but working ) resolution ( like 1183x819@60Hz ).
Ok, I try to change it using the System-
I put there 1024 x 768 which is the optimal for my monitor... but it list only 60Hz.
My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 151BM and my graphics card is an XFX GeForce 8600GT.
Then I installed the Forceware 177.80 using Synaptic. I run the nvidia-settings tool which detects all the modes well.
I save the settings in the XOrg.conf file and exit the nvidia-settings.
I reboot and log ( this time the screen is set into the correct mode )... but when I re-open the System-

In Jaunty (9.04) we have dropped the nvidia- graphics- driver- 177 package, as graphics- drivers- 180.
it is superseded by nvidia-
Your reported issue may still be a problem in Intrepid (8.10) however
fixing it would require an update to the binary driver, which is not
permitted under our stable release update policy. (Because the driver is
binary-only, we cannot examine the source code for regression potential,
so must assume every binary driver update carries high risk of regression
for users not experiencing your issue.)
Because of this, we are closing this bug as expired.
You are encouraged to file your -nvidia bug reports against the graphics- drivers- 180 package.
