Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10 installed on Amilo Li 1718 laptop machine. When powered on with an active Ethernet connection, black screen appears instantly (no startup, no BIOS, nothing). LED displaying hard disk/CD activity is constantly on. If restarted right away (eth0 pulled out), it's still the same. One must wait for at least 1-2 minutes before powering on in order to have the system start up properly. (Maybe it only needs to get unplugged from the AC network, and then replugged.)
Same black-out appears when the machine is waked up from suspend mode with an active eth0 connection.

Eth0 device: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
