So how do I go about doing this?? I've never messed with anything like
this... a detailed process would be greatly appreciated

I wonder if this will help at all. I get the same problem. It seems after the update, this crashes.

This problem seems to affect many other GUI based commands such as sudo nautilus.
In any case, you can edit it by hand.
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom

This will allow you to change some aspects of your login window. If you want to get rid of the beep when the login screen shows, use the command below.

# SoundOnLogin=false (will get rid of the annoying beep)
SoundOnLogin=false

I posted an article for this on

Hope this helps
