I have seen the same effect, but my real printers are remain there, the PDF printer is gone. I have to reinstall with "sudo apt-get install cups-pdf"

It happened on three separates computers. They all lost PDF CUPS printer after upgrade.

Ubuntu 8.10 is no longer supported.
It would help if you could test if this still occurs on Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS dist-upgrade.
Please provide the output of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript in 8.10, do the dist-upgrade then run the following command in 10.04.1 LTS on a terminal: apport-collect 291514.
Please also add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments.
Thanks in advance.
