Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

Hi,

I'm running intrepid AMD64 on a Asus M50VM-AS010C, with daily updates.
It works fine except one issue with DVD drive.

First disk inserted works well (can read or browse, and eject)
Second one, doesn't mount and can not be ejected.
The drive sound turning at high speed.
Attempt to mount (by nautilus or from terminal) gives same answer: no media detected.
The only way to get the disk back is to reboot system.

I've found a fix from ubuntu forum
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=921556

The fix consist of turning SATA mode from enhanced to IDE compatible in bios menu.
What worry me is that this options is given from the bios for compatibility with OS non supporting SATA drives (like W2000 as it is written in bios help!!).
So, i'd like to find another way to make it works well.

Thanks for helping

Same thing happening here with Intrepid and Asus M50vm-b1 in enhanced mode. Did not try compatible mode as that shouldn't have to be disabled. I can't even install Intrepid because the dvd drive spins up and stops responding about 75 percent of the way through the install. I am then asked to please insert the cd. It is still spinned up in the drive. I then have to restart the computer for the dvd drive to work again.

Any chance to fix this bug?

This seems to be a firmware issue with the HL-DT-ST GSA-T50N SATA DVD drive (firmware revision RR04).

Please see this linux-ide thread for reference:

http://marc.info/?l=linux-ide&m=123036943617718&w=2

Hitachi LG does not offer firmware updates to end customers, only to manufacturers (http://www.hlds.co.jp/e_HLDS/faq.jsp).

I tried to obtain a firmware upgrade from Asus but failed.

Switching from "Enhanced" (AHCI) to "Compatible" in the BIOS fixes the problem but disables eSATA hotplugging. So this is not always a viable option.

Asus replaces these drives under warranty. I'm still trying, however
to get an updater. Rev RR07 fixes this, and it's the one that came
with the drive that asus sent me back for my laptop.

Hi Marcus!

How did you managed to get a new drive?
The laptop is sold with vista, is it affected by the bug?
If there is a bug with vista, can you give me details to send to Asus
(I've dropped Vista, and don't like to reinstall it...)
If not, how can you use warranty for an OS not supported?
Did you send your laptop or just the drive?

Thanks for your answer.

To a lesser extent than linux. Better explained in the thread Peter
Klotz pointed to, in the linux-ide ml.

Mentioned a couple lines before.

Warrant is related to hardware, it doesn't depend from software. If
you like i can share the documents concerning my warranty, in Italian
however.

> Did you send your laptop or just the drive?

Asus wanted the entire laptop to be RMAed, but after a couple times
that I said that I needed my laptop, they agreed to just RMA the
drive.

Procedura RMA di asus. Mandagli un email col form sul sito di
supporto. Poi ti diranno loro. Riporta come problema il fatto che si
blocca nel tentativo di leggere i dischi che gli inserisci.

This is a bit offtopic here. If you need the translation I'll be happy
to do it. If I could not say that here please feel free to delete or

After the drive installation I upgraded its firmware to the newest version (SB01) that can be downloaded from http://www.samsungodd.com/.

The drive works perfectly and passes all tests that the Hitachi/LG model failed.

It is disappointing that Asus Germany is unwilling to recognize the severity of this problem. A simple download could have fixed this issue faster and cheaper.

I also find it strange that the drive manufacturer Hitachi/LG does not offer any support for its drive although it is obviously not working correctly.

Hi,

I've send a mail to asus about the dvd issue.
They send me a RMA number and the problem seems to be recognized by asus
france.
I'm now trying to obtain agreement to send only the drive as Marcus did
in Italia.

I'll report here the results...

It's a firmware bug. In windows you have to mess so hard with this
device until it sends a Unit Busy SCSI result, then windows asks for a
Test Unit Ready and the device locks up. It is fixed in the rev R?05
(?=Digit changes depending on OEM) and later. I, presently, after
having RMAed the drive, am at the rev RR07 and thus not suffering
anymore of this bug in the firmware. Possible temporary fix on ubuntu
is to make a scsi_quirks.h file in the kernel where if a device
matches a specified pattern the command linux sends to the device are
substituted with working alternatives, or ignored altogether.

marcus905, may I ask where did you get the firmware update? I don't seem to find it anywhere. This bug makes the drive unusable with AHCI.

Thank you so much xblack86!
Only one question, where did you get it? I've searched really a lot for this FW but without any success...

OK!

I installed the firmware linked in xblack86 post and everithing works fine now also with the BIOS option set to "Ehanched". I didn't stress intensively the device yet, but I burned a couple of DVDs and mount/read/umount about 10 different cd/dvd without any problem. Before the update I wasn't able neither to mount a single cd/dvd without freeze the device.

So, problem solved! Thank you xblack86 and thank you marcus905 for the support.

I am having the same problem, with one difference: my G50Vt has the GSA-T50L drive, not T50N. I can't find any bit of difference in the specs. (Maybe the T50N doesn't have LightScribe?) Firmware version is SR04.

Asus has been *no* help, sadly. I'm hoping to find a way to get the T50N firmware to work on it; I'd happily give up LightScribe to have a working drive.

You can backup the firmware of your drive and put the rr07 normally on it,
