Bug Description

The machine is an HP dv2000 (specifically a dv2423la). I didn't have this issue in any other ubuntu release until now.

Intrepid Ibex RC hangs when shutting down or restarting (in the shutting down part) for a few minutes. A black screen appears with what seems to be a prompt (but isn't) in the upper left corner of the screen. When I change the tty the process where it seems to hang is "shutting down ALSA...". After a few minutes the "Stopping bluetooth" appears and everything goes on as normal.

With boot-up manager I tried to locate the shutdown script that has something to do with bluetooth to deactivate it (since I don't use it) and check if the hanging still occurred but didn't find it. UPDATE: I don't know why I'm looking a bluetooth script if the problem is when shutting down ALSA. My bad.

UPDATE: in the tty with the "prompt", when the shutting down process is resumed a message that reads "acpid: exiting". I dunno what is the connection.

I'm also getting the "acpid exiting" hang. Is this a different bug? It sure seems to be. I'm running an Acer Aspire 5602 WLMi.

I think I close it too soon as a duplicate. Could be an acpid bug.

Sorry :(

I got this bug in a Toshiba Tecra M5389 (Ubu 8.10 AMD64), my colleague got it in a generic desktop with a PIII processor.
I've seen thousands of reports all over the web, this should be treated with maximum urgency, and it looks very serious to me.

@Fred, it seems to be a duplicate, I've been following the other thread and it is the same problem, apparently.

@Anu: Yep, this bug is affecting a wide range of people.

Does the other bug have anything to do with "acpid: exiting" showing
up after trying to reboot? It will hang like this for a while and then
the reboot will happen.

This is also affecting one of my machines (amd64). Upon shutdown/restart, shutdown sequence appears to 'hang', goes to a blank screen (flashing cursor in upper left corner of screen), after 2-3 minutes displays message 'acpid Exiting.', then procedes to shutdown/reboot normally.

Are there any logs or system info I can provide to aide in discovering/fixing problem?

@Tanino Rulez, tried instructions in your post with no success. Thanks, though.

Just another note: if I switch to a non X session (e.g. TTY1) during shutdown, it appears to be 'hanging' during 'Shutting down ALSA...'

I do not believe this is a duplicate bug. The workarounds in the duplicate do not work to solve the 'acpi: exiting' message and my computer never completes the shutdown or reboot even if left alone for a full day.

The linked duplicate bug can be "fixed" by linking the /etc/init.d/NetworkManager to /etc/rc0.d/K40NetworkManager and /etc/rc6.d/K40NetworkManager, but that does not eliminate the hang for me - simply moves it past the ALSA issue.

I think this should be unmarked as duplicate.

I concur that this is not a duplicate, FWIW.

My read of this (288863) bug is that the failure mode is that the computer fails to shut down, the last thing displayed is "acpid exiting."

The "hang" in 274995 isn't a hang but a long delay (about 2.5 minutes). The hang in the reports involving "acpid exiting" seems endless.

Will remove the duplicate marking then.

Got the same problem on my Acer Extensa 3000 WLMi here, since I upgraded to intrepid.
The system gets stuck while rebooting/shutting down, displaying 'acpid exiting'.

I'm no IT-specialist myself, but I will gladly supply information to you if instructed how to collect it ;-)

I got a lot of problems with wifi (fuckin' ipw3945), and I need to reboot very often. My computer sometimes manage to reboot, but most of the time I got a "acpi: exiting' message and I need to push the button to shutdown my laptop. The message is sometimes different, I'll try to catch it the next time.

As Ingmar Schneider said,

And then.. nothing at all.

This bug 288863 as originally reported is probably a duplicate of bug 274995. However, the symptom of having to shut down using the power button even after waiting 5+ more minutes is NOT a symptom of 274995. (The hang in 274995 is usually 2-3 minutes).

@Brion,Kill0u since the original of this bug is a duplicate, I'm thinking your comments (involving the never-ending hang at acpid) is different. You should search for or open a specific report. You may want to consider Bug 126140, which is a failure to shut-down, (but it is specific to Intel HDA sound). But if that's not your bug, then please open one.
