This is a problem for me as well on amd 64. Worked under 8.04. Broke after upgrading to 8.10.

A work-around for this seems to be setting this in /etc/default/bluetooth:

 HID2HCI_ENABLED=0

I can confirm that this bug affects my Logitech Coordless Desktop in combination with an Intel Mac Mini.

Brad:s suggestion seems to work, for me. Huge thanks, Brad (I think I've had this problem. for even longer than 8.04)

tarabaz, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Intrepid reached EOL on April 30, 2010.
