Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

If I try to format an external usb floppy drive I see the error "Cannot initialize device ... you do not have the proper permissions to write to /dev/floppy/0 or /dev/fd0 formatting will not be possible.....". In fact my usb floppy is mounted as /dev/sdb (I can see this from df command or from dmesg). I think this is a first bug.
Then I launch gfloppy with --device /dev/sdb but the error is similar.
If I try to write into the floppy all runs ok.
If I try to mkfs.msdos -I /dev/sdb from root (with sudo) the format process runs ok.

ls -la /dev/sdb
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 16 2008-10-14 12:34 /dev/sdb

thank you for your bug report, does running the command line tools not using sudo works correctly?

Sebastien, if I try to execute
mkfs.msdos -I /dev/sdb (or mkfs.msdos /dev/sdb) from "normal" user I receive
/dev/sdb: Permission denied

However, as I sayd in my previous post, I can normally write or delete files inside my floppy through its mount point.

you also get the issue using the command line tools so the issue is not a gnome-utils one

laurent07, why have you put the status of this issue "incomplete"? Doesn't incomplete status mean that it has not received a response, from the submitter, to a request (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status)? I replied to Sebastien request on 2008-10-15 as you can read above. No further requests were made.
The status should be set again to "new".

I set it back to status "new" as I explained in my previous comment.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release (10.04)? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I haven't anymore an external usb floppy to test with 10.04. I hope someone else can help to this debug.
