Ubuntu 8.10 Beta won't ReStart or Shut Down

Yesterday's 02 October 2008 Beta Release of Ubuntu 8.10 using kernel 2.6.27.4-generic won't Shut Down or Restart after hard drive installation, requiring power off before Restart from cold. I thought that this problem had been fixed in Alpha-6 (Bug Report #271028) but evidently this does not apply to the Beta release.

Further Information - Trying a Restart again, it consistently stops after ' * Stopping firewall' and then actually pauses for three minutes, whilst displaying ' * Shutting down ALSA...' before then resuming normal restart operations.

It's still a problem with the -7 kernel Update, so I hope it gets fixed for the definitive release.

I can confirm the same problem also with the Daily Build that I installed on October 25, 2008. I installed it on a Acer Travelmate 2312 and I have the same problem. I am forced to shut down the system by hitting the power button on the notebook. it consistently stops after ' * Stopping firewall' and then actually pauses for three minutes, whilst displaying ' * Shutting down ALSA...'. Hitting the power switch once, just displays, Stopping Gnome Display...

Just for the record, today's formal release of Ubuntu 8.10 is even worse. After a lot of attempts, a LiveCD session fails to load on my E4600 [B] rig, and when installed instead can only be ShutDown or ReStarted by switching off the PC. Instead of dwelling for three minutes at failure to close ALSA, it now simply stops with a blank screen and a winking cursor.
I'm restoring Ubuntu 8.04.1 and will try to close this Bug Report and in due course raise a new one for Ubuntu 8.10 formal release.
