Thanks for reporting this package suggestion and any supporting documentation. Since this report has enough information provided for a packager to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Ralph,

1) Firstly - Thanks for your thanks.
Its the nicest thanks yet.

2) I ended up making two submission for this package.

When I was submitting all the Aptana related programs, i had another window with the list of bugs, and somehow the earlier submission didn't show on the list. So I figured that I had either not done it, or not pressed the save button, or it got lost. But anyway I couldn't find it even when I looked through the entire list 3 time over (and I have a long list).

3) The previous submission is bug number #276859 [needs-packaging] Pydev - Python IDE for Eclipse
which has the following comment ;

Pydev is already packaged as 'eclipse-pydev'.

So it appears that the program has already been packaged. It is named in association with Eclipse which it Does work with. But it is part of the Aptana suite.

Can it be renamed to "aptana-eclipse-pydev" ?

or can this Pydev be packaged as "aptana-pydev" ?

What ever can be done, it looks both of my submissions are duplicates of an earlier one(s).

4) Doing a quick search for "eclipse-pydev" on ubuntu launchpad showed there were some problems related to creating the package for the earlier requests, probably for earlier versions.

The earlier site references were at sourceforge http://pydev.sourceforge.net/index.html

There is an error, there are two versions of pydev extensions.

- One version, as close source which is NOT a free software and we'll can find to this link http://www.fabioz.com/pydev.
Actually, the terms of License of this package is not really compatible with Ubuntu Policy for main or universe components (just to restricted).

- However , i found a open-source version of pydev extension, which has exactly the same name and with website http://pydev.sourceforge.net/.
It's the "Pydev open source version" named in the top of this report. Indeed it's this package that is integrated in universe branch.

So, the second is 100% agree and compatible with universe policy.

i'm sorry it was an error from me.

So it is clear that there is more than one program by the name of pydev.
Therefore a more distinguishing name is needed (possibly as per suggestion in (3) above.

6) It looks like the packages going by this name have been submitted several times, and duplicates have not been picked up. But also because there are more than one (possibly three) programs by this name, then there needs to be "extra care" taken in figuring which are duplicates of what.
At least one may have issues with the license.
(similar problem as for a couple of programs called "sage" )
