Bug Description

The symptoms match those from Bug #43666

There is the little drum on the login screen, but then the login sound cannot be heard, no logout sound either.
Other sounds will not be played.

But all sounds can be heard correctly when played (test button arrow) from the gnome-sound properties window.
Being on ubuntu scheme or a custom one do not change anything.

as of this morning's updates, a login sound can be heard (which sounds like Windows by the way, it's awful).

But still no sound on logout.

Furthermore, the sound cannot be previewed anymore in gnome-sound-properties.
There is also an error while "testing" the sound server in the devices tab. Error for alsa and pulse. OSS gives no error and a "test" sound (but no sound "preview")

I doubt this bug is a duplicate of Bug #43666. This sounds like a pulseaudio problem and pulseaudio was not included in dapper (Bug #43666 applies to dapper). Also, that bug has a Fix Released so it should be impossible for that bug to affect you, seeing as it has supposedly been fixed.

indeed.

My system is ibex fully updated (install from scratch)

I have the little drum sound at the login screen, then I have the defaut login sound (which is weird as it is the ubuntu scheme which is selected in gnome-sound-properties). Then nothing, sound is dead.

if I log out, back at the login screen, there is the little drum again.

I log in, I hear no (login) sound BUT after the desktop is loaded I can play all kind of sound and pulse audio tests in gnome-sound-properties do work correctly without any "streaming" errors.

Please advise on what tests/files you would like me to provide you with.

One interesting thing, all what I said above was without compiz activated.

If I activate compiz (system/pref/appearance) then the sound is "normal" afterwards and upon reboot as well.

I'm experiencing the same problem as James. My syslog also shows the same error he is receiving.

This is due to bug 274124 being fixed. (This bug seems to be a duplicate of it)
