Bug Description

I foolishly deleted my Desktop directory, and now my home directory is being treated as the Desktop. This same problem has been reported by others, and stated to be solved by revising the line in the .config/user-dirs.dirs file

XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"
to
XDG-DESKTOP-DIR="$HOME/Desktop"

However, when I have done this, relogging or rebooting causes this line in this file to revert to the original, and the problem is unsolved

any help would be appreciated, thanks

Thank you for reporting this bug. Please try to set the XDG_DESKTOP_DIR with the xdg-user-dirs-update script.

Thanks for responding

can you please tell me how to employ the xdg-user-dirs-update script?

sorry for my ignorance, I just used vim or gedit to edit and save the
file .config/user-dirs.dirs

Since I was unable to successfully alter the line in
~/.config/user-dirs.dirs, I realized that the simpler expedient was to
use file manager to retrieve all the lost directories, including
Desktop, from trash and reboot.

This restored everything perfectly.

Sorry for wasting the time of this forum with such a trivial problem.
