Crash when right clicking desktop

Bug #256414 reported by Craig Younkins

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfdesktop4

Symptom:
xfdesktop crashes. It no longer shows up in 'ps ax' and the 'Allow Xfce to manage my desktop' become unticked.
---------------------------------------
When it happens:
Right clicking on the desktop.
---------------------------------------
Dump of current settings under Settings -> Desktop:
Allow Xfce to manage my desktop: Ticked
Appearance Tab
Color style: Solid color
First color: Blue
Show Image: Ticked
File: /home/aboutblank/.config/xfce4/desktop/backdrops.list
Style: stretched
Adjust Brightness: 0

Behavior Tab
Show window list on middle click: Ticked
Show desktop menu on right click: NOT TICKED
Desktop Icons: None
---------------------------------------
Environment:
Xubuntu 8.04.1 64-bit with latest updates as of 8/9/08
Xfdesktop4 version 4.4.2-5ubuntu1.1
---------------------------------------
Running xfdesktop in terminal:
$ xfdesktop
picked i=245, /home/aboutblank/Unison/Wallpapers/01193_santacruzsunset_1440x900.jpg
Segmentation fault
---------------------------------------

Middle clicking on the desktop has never caused the problem.

After enabling "Show desktop menu on right click," right clicking the desktop does NOT cause it to crash.

After a crash, I can restart xfdesktop by re-ticking "Allow Xfce to manage my desktop".

It's unclear to me if this is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfdesktop4/+bug/185302

I think it's a dup of bug #99040 but your backtrace looks better.
Thanks!

I think it might be calling for something to handle icons for the right click menu since xfce does not render menus on right-clicks anymore, but, there is no program to handle it.

I think the tick for "Show Desktop Menu on Right Click" tells it to use either xfce's right click or use another instead of, what it should be, no manager for right-click menus.

My two cents.

I'm giving up; unless I miss something more obvious, the 02_show_context_menu patch needs quite some love and I don't feel like spending more energy on this.
