Bug Description

OpenSimulator is an open source server for hosting virtual worlds similar to Second Life. OpenSimulator uses libsecondlife to handle communication between the client and server, so it is possible to connect to an OpenSim server using the Linden Lab Second Life client.

There are some new .deb packages available in opensim's website. I suppose that contact its creator would be of help.

Hi. I've been providing binary .deb packages for OpenSim for the past few months. You can find details at:

   http://pkg.knifejaw.com/ubuntu/dists/opensim/
   http://opensimulator.org/wiki/UnofficialDebPackages

(I referred to them as "unofficial" simply in the sense the they weren't built by the core OpenSim dev team)

Admittedly the current packages don't strictly follow the DPM, especially regarding file location, but that's simply because I never got around to fixing them. But I'd be willing to clean up the packages and volunteer to provide them in a more "official" capacity.

As OpenSimulator is still in an alpha (or pre-alpha, depending on whom you ask) state, I've been building packages of both the tagged releases when they're announced and of the SVN development trunk at least once per week for those who want to stay closer to the bleeding edge. More info at the above links.

I think that work over the packages that contain the tagged releases should be a good starting point.
Just tell me if you need help.

I haven't forgotten about this. There's currently some refactoring taking place in OpenSim which will affect how config files are used, so I was hoping for that to finalize before packaging. If it doesn't in the next two weeks, I'll provide a package for 0.6.4, the current release.

What is the status of the packaging then? Did the config refactoring complete?

Unfortunately, no. OpenSim is still undergoing a large amount of
refactoring, and config file structure still has some more changes
coming. The most recent release (0.6.5.1) was tagged before this
refactoring started, so the next version will contain substantial
changes.

When is the deadline be to have a new package accepted into Karmic?
Feature Freeze on August 27? Or is it prior to that?

Yes, Aug 27th. Karmic schedule in: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicReleaseSchedule

But, citing (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureFreeze):

New packages need to be checked by archive administrators before they find their way into the archive. This process can take several days up to a few weeks. For the purpose of the FeatureFreeze, the upload date matters, i. e. all packages which are in the NEW queue by that time will be processed without the need for an exception.

Hi, I'm taking this as I have now some working source packages done, that, with some clean up could be suitable for the lucid launch.

You can find a rough version in my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~shankao/+archive/opensimulator

It's a while that I'm not continuing with this packaging so unassinging me.
Anyway the preview packages that I made could be used as a base if ever someone wants to continue the task. Look at the PPA in the previous comments and feel free to contact me for help.

The main OpenSim service refactoring was finally completed. Some config files are currently being moved around, but that should be finished in the next OpenSim release, which should be more easy to lay out in a FHS-compliant way. When it's released I'll package it up.

As OpenSim made big enhancements and is really usuable, it would be good to have a package of the next release.
