after installing CONEXANT modem driver => failing to use Synaptic

Bug Description
The error received from synaptic:
E: The package conexant needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

(1) can't use update tool
(2) the driver was installed using dpkg and when I tried unintalling:

Thanks for your bugreport.
Where did you got the "conexant" deb-package from? Is the advice "please
reinstall it first" any help? Or do you don't have the package anymore? If
re-install it (and then removing it) is no help I would like to know the error
messages. We may have to try something different then.
I'm sorry, there isn't a lot that can be done here except trying to get rid of
the "conexant" package. It has messed up the package database pretty badly it seems.
I would also be interessted in the line that contain "conexant" in
/var/log/dpkg.log.
