Bug Description

We've discussed this, but I'm just getting everything into bugzilla for 5.10 so
that nothing is forgotten.

I've moved emacs21/pymacs out to supported, saving a little under 14MB on the
install CD; that should just about get it within 650MB on all architectures,
although powerpc might be touch and go there.

I note that we could save a further 1.5MB essentially for free by removing the
Packages files and including only Packages.gz; unfortunately debootstrap
requires that Packages is listed in Release, even if it decides to use
Packages.bz2 or Packages.gz instead. We could theoretically work around that in
debian-cd, but it's risky for breezy. Something to think about for dapper.

The WinFOSS changes will get the live CDs down to within 6 or 7MB. There's very
little we can do in terms of seed changes without touching desktop, which is
hard at this point. I see a few other possible savings, though:

  * We can remove /install/netboot/ from the amd64 and i386 live CDs. It's
useful on the install CD, but given that it's only there as a convenience and
that we're tight on space, I say lose it from the live CD.

  * We can remove at least some of /install/powerpc/vmlinuz-*.initrd from the
powerpc live CD; perhaps keep vmlinuz-chrp.initrd so that Sven doesn't excoriate
me for dropping Pegasos support, but the others are even more niche and dropping
them will save over 18MB. We can drop some of these from the install CD if
necessary, too. I'd rather have more language packs than the OldWorld and PReP
initrds.

I've made these changes now, so we'll see how it looks when we restart image
building. With any luck we may even be able to add some language packs to powerpc.

After that, powerpc/install and amd64/live were still oversized. I've resolved
the powerpc/install problem, but not yet amd64/live.

The live CDs are about to get screwed by the addition of
openoffice.org2-help-en-us to language-support-en. What should we do about this?

it depends on java-gcj-compat | java1-runtime, so it's not specific to

Something less important than openoffice will have to go. Can we trim the
WinFOSS further?

i386 has: openoffice (77mb), firefox (4.7mb), gaim (6.7mb)
AMD64 has: firefox (4.7mb), gaim (6.7mb), abiword (5mb), thunderbird (5.75mb)

gaim, abiword or thunderbird could go. I would say Firefox is even more
important than openoffice though.

We're currently 7.7MB over on amd64. Ugh. I'm going to remove python-opengl from
desktop, saving 2.75MB; Henrik, could you remove Thunderbird from the amd64
WinFOSS tarball?

I've uploaded a new reduced version. Removing thunderbird and related
screenshots has saved us around 6.5MB. So it looks like we are in the clear :)

All Ubuntu images are now within size limits, thanks to a reset of the
amd64/live cloop, and Ubuntu amd64/live is back to using the unreduced WinFOSS
tarball. We have a fair bit of latitude for changes in dapper now. Unless you're
also bothered about some of the Kubuntu images having drifted up towards 700MB,
I'm closing this. Hooray.
