Bug Description

The install/live DVD is a wonderful resource. Looking at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/20080417/ (you may have to change the date part) it appears that there is a *lot* of unused space on the DVD! Approximately 700 MiB of space is available.

It would be great if this space was filled up with more software. I will not speculate on what software should be included (from main/universe/multiverse/etc.). This decision can be reached by voting or whatever system the release managers choose.

Please note that including these additional packages onto the DVD will _not_ automatically install them by default.

I fully agree that unused space should be filled. Users that are downloading a 3G file probably won't care about downloading a 4G one, and waste storage on one-time-use media is criminal.

This figure fluctuates a lot due to dependencies flapping around, and as such it's only practical to fill it up immediately before release (otherwise we spend lots of time trying to get the DVD to fit), when there are typically lots of more important things to do. I wouldn't hold your breath too much for this bug.

In consolation, software tends to grow over time, so I have no doubt that this bug will be fixed without us having to do much at all. :-)

According to the last DVD images (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/20081018/), the size of the images are around 4go.
Maybe we should close this report.

i see the following problems with this proposal:
a) wasting developer resources trying to decide what else to put in the dvd to fill the space
b) with the increasing adoption of live usb sticks, filling the 4.7GB of a dvd would prevent users from using a 4GB stick for a liveusb
c) additional load on the ubuntu download servers

i really think this is a well-intended but bad idea... I also vote for closing this
