Bug Description

Running Hardy (8.04)

The linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16-xen package is missing the nvidia modules.

The package record (apt-cache show) suggest nvidia support but the package doesn't actually contain any nvidia modules unlike the linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-16-generic package.

 Xen dom0 and domU.
Currently the following modules are included:

  - nvidia
 .
These modules are "restricted" because they are not available under a
 completely Free licence.

This might be due to bug #150192 (i.e. the NVIDIA drivers do not work well with xen)

Using the patch found at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=78632 I have been able to create a patch that can be passed to nvidia's .run installer to make it create another installer that works flawlessly for me on an x86_64 with a 2.6.24-16-xen kernel. I hope this can be adapted to the linux-restricted-modules-*-xen package.
What I did is basically apply the relevant parts of the original patch, and modify the configuration system (the conftest.sh script) to use KBuild instead of calling gcc directly.

I'm using version 169.12 of the nvidia drivers from their website.

To install the driver with this patch on an ubuntu 8.04 with a xen kernel, do:
 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.12-pkg2.run --apply-patch nvidia-with-xen.diff
then use the newly generated installer:
 sudo CC=gcc-4.1 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.12-pkg2-custom.run

Seems like Timo has been doing most of the work related to nvidia drivers in linux-restricted-modules.

The driver is being split from l-r-m for Intrepid, and the hero who is doing the most work is Alberto Milone. Reassigning.

I'm not sure if this will be acceptable for hardy..

Hi tim-bateman,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
