Thanks for taking the time to write this detailed bug report. Unfortunately in this current state it cannot be acted upon by developers. Ideally a bug should be filed for each package that you are having difficulty with (from the report i am guessing they lack easy documentation or if a graphical app, lack a .desktop (menu) file). Could you write a list of packages you are having problems with so that specific bugs can be filed and fixed.

olli - Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu better. However, I'm going to close this report, as you should open bug reports against the particular packages that you have problems with. Ordinary users shouldn't need to launch applications from the command line. If they do, then that is a bug against that particular package. If you find packages with missing launcher icons, then please open a bug report against that package with the 'desktop-file' tag.
