Bug Description

Please see this forum thread describing the problem:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=671411

"Not connected?" popup keeps on coming up for a particular printer. I click it and it comes back. I asked about this in #ubuntu and then found this thread on ubuntuforums.org and figured that it was a bug that others are seeing.

This is in Ubuntu 7.10.

In the "Policies" tab in the "Printer configuration" application, I've chosen to unclick
The three active state check boxes:
    * Enabled
    * Accepting jobs
    * Shared.
All three are unchecked. But the popup still persists.

Also, under settings the Device URI is:
socket://<printer_ip_address>:9100
So I believe it's an IPP type setup.

In synaptic cupsys version is listed as 1.3.2-1ubuntu7.5

Please provide the information described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, especially your cups error_log. Are there any errors in /var/log/syslog?

Yep. Definitely errors in the error log.

Are you able to print with the above errors?

What is the output of the following commands on a terminal:
$ hostname

Please make sure you have clicked "Enabled" and "Accepting jobs" checkboxes.

ocoo-ocho is the name of the localhost.

I deleted the printer configuration because of those popups becoming very frustrating (and on the advice of people in #ubuntu).

I just tried to re-install the printer, and it doesn't seem to be working right now (not sure why), but I'm also not getting the "Not Connected?" popup either.

Well I've gotten this error again! It's back!

When it comes up I *cannot* print to the disconnected printer. Print jobs just go into the "manage print jobs" queue where it says "processing" indefinitely. And pending for any subsequent requests.

At the same time, I *can* print to *other* network printers.

By the way, this only re-emerged today, after I installed the new Ubuntu release 8.04, Hardy Heron.

I haven't deleted or tried to fix the situation again, because I would like to see this fixed.

If this bug is about the annoying "not connected" notification then I can confirm this problem in Hardy.

The shared printer is switched off so the job can't complete. In this case the "not connected" notification is correct. But the notification keeps coming back every 10 seconds even after having been cancelled and it is quite irritating.

Correct behaviour: Once the "Not connected" bubble has been cancelled, do not notify again and change the printer icon to indicate the problem.

Note: this is not about a printing problem, it's about the notification.

To reproduce: switch off the remote printer and print to it. The "Not connected?" notification appears.

this will sound silly but make sure you've not got a print job pending and no printer attached

OK. Sorry, this is an old bug, I know.

But I printed 16 pages this morning, and everything was fine. Ten minutes ago, I needed to print some more, and I clicked print from Evince. I got this error. I didn't cancel the job and decided to Google this problem. Around five minutes later, the printer just began to print! It took five full minutes at least and I did get the "Not connect?" error a few times, I just ignored it.

Very very odd.

Oh, and I've seen this before (a month ago, I presume). I don't remember what I did.

I'm on Intrepid, HP Deskjet 3745, using HPLIP 2.8.7 (2.8.7-0ubuntu6) and cups 1.3.9-2ubuntu9.1

Thanks
