The tomcat native library improves the performance of tomcat. We already have the required dependencies (APR 1.2+, OpenSSL 0.9.7+, JNI headers from Java compatible JDK 1.4+). I think this would be a nice step forward in making Ubuntu a little more server friendly.

Here's my attempt at packaging. The debs are successfully made and installable, and it works. I hope that this is acceptable, but seeing as how this is my first packaging effort, I'm sure there are mistakes.

Strongly agree with this.

I tried installing APR myself on Apache Tomcat 6.0 and no I didn't make it.

APR is essential for maximum performance of Tomcat.

And APR is required for proper operation for data push feature of GraniteDS, which requires APR + Tomcat 6, which was the reason that I attempted to install APR myself and failed. :-((

Just to let you know, I've done some initial packaging on tomcat6.6 for debian available at git://femme.catnip.org.uk/tomcat6.git which includes a libtcnative-1 package
